Dear Members,

The Society for Pediatric Research (SPR) and American Pediatric Society (APS) have a long-standing history of productive collaboration and share more than 500 members in common. As Presidents of the Societies, we share your desire for the organizations to measure and take steps to improve the diversity, equity and inclusion of SPR and APS programs and membership. To do so in a data-driven way, we need your help to close a critical data gap that constrains our ability to measure and to act.

Currently we lack basic, current demographic and DEI-related data on more than half our members. This shortcoming, despite early and important work led by the SPR Justice, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (JEDI) and the APS Committee on Diversity Inclusion and Equity (CODIE) groups, is a significant impediment.

To close this gap, by September 10, please visit the SPR or APS or website, login, select My Account and provide the requested contact, demographic and professional interests data. This will take approximately 5 minutes. As a member of both SPR and APS, you need to update only once, either your SPR or APS account. For convenience, Society staff will automatically share your data with the other relevant society, APS or SPR. If you prefer, you may contact us to opt-out of this data share.

The information collected will aid Members and society leadership alike. Through each Society’s Member Directory, it will be easier for you to:
  • Make DEI-aware speaker selections for PAS sessions, Grand Rounds or other events.
  • Consider DEI as you recruit faculty.
  • Proactively consider DEI in award or new member nominations.
  • Find current email or phone contact information for colleagues.
  • Identify and connect with colleagues with specific research or professional expertise.
  • Identify and connect with potential mentors/mentees within or beyond your institution.

On behalf of the SPR and APS leadership, thank you in advance for providing your data. Your cooperation offers essential support to the Societies’ efforts to build a diverse, equitable and inclusive academic pediatric community and multi-disciplinary network of diverse pediatric researchers. If you have any questions regarding this effort, please do not hesitate to reach out to us.

Sincerely,
Beth Tarini, MD, MS, MBA (Class of 2022)
2021-2022 SPR President
